The Evangelical Lutheran Church of France is FELM’s partner in France. In Marseille, FELM is involved in ministry and diaconia and congregational work with the Saint Pierre congregation in Paris. The work is focused on the immigrant community.

Ministry and Congregational work

France

The French Government does not officially recognize any religion. Schools, for instance, do not provide religious education. France is, however, considered a Catholic country due to the majority of the population being Catholic. Muslim’s make up the second largest religious community in France. The majority of the 4-6 million Muslims are North African immigrants, but there are also French converts to Islam. There are half a million Protestants in France.

FELM supports the ministry, congregational work and the inner city ministry of the Diocese of Paris of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of France. In Marseille, the ministry of St. Gabriel Christian community receives support, as does the ministry and congregational work carried out by the church of St. Pierre in Paris.

Community Support and Capacity Building

Marseille is one of the largest cities in France. The city has an influx of immigrants particularly from North Africa. The situation of the immigrant population is difficult due to the influence of unemployment and other social problems.

FELM supports the activities of the Marhaba diaconia centre. The centre is housed in the Marhaba neighbourhood that is home to many North Africans and Comorians. The centre arranges recreational activities such as camping, concerts and runs cafes.
